The continued rise in demand for holidays in the Canaries has seen hotel prices form June rise well above the average increase recorded for Spain overall.

A comprehensive survey by travel site Trivago reveals that prices being charged this month in the islands are up just over 12% compared to June a year ago. The figure for the rest of the country is a mere 5%, reflecting the greater demand for hotels in the Canaries on the eve of the main summer period on the mainland. The price rise will come as a welcome boost for the hotel sector, although some have voiced fears that steep increases could encourage potential holidaymakers from Europe to look elsewhere for last-minute bookings in the coming weeks.

The study coincides with the release of air passenger figures for the first five months of 2016 which show that 5.4 million foreigners flew into the Canaries between January and May, a 12% increase on the same period in 2015. May brought a sharp rise in the number of Britons and Germans, up 16% and 15% respectively compared to 12 months ago.
